Another common symptom is foreign matter sensation. It is the feeling that there is sand or other object or substance in your eye.
And although it sounds strange, watery eyes can also be a symptom of dry eye syndrome.
This is because the dryness of the eye surface will sometimes overstimulate the production of the watery component of your tears as a protective mechanism.
Home Remedies For Dry Eyes
1. Vitamins and Nutrients
Dry eye syndrome can be the result of any vitamin deficiency. Studies have proven that vitamin D, B12, and vitamin A deficiency are associated with the development of the condition.
Therefore, it is extremely important to add foods high in these vitamins to your diet. Foods such as egg yolks, cereals, orange juice, carrots, spinach, broccoli, and butter are rich sources of vitamin D and A.
You can also increase your intake of foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as sardines, salmon, mackerel, spinach, soybeans, and chia seeds. Omega-3 fatty acids increase your eyes’ lubricating film production.
2. Lavender Oil
Lavender oil’s anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and analgesic properties are beneficial in the treatment of dry eyes.
Dryness often causes eye irritation and lavender oil has an instant soothing and relaxing effect.
- 3-4 drops of lavender essential oil
- A cup of lukewarm water
- A clean cloth
Add a few drops of lavender oil to a glass of water. Stir it and soak a clean cloth in this solution. Squeeze the excess water and put it in your eyes.
Hold for 15-10 minutes and repeat the process. You can do this at least three times a day.
3. Fish Oil
Supplementing with fish oil is another proven way to naturally heal dry eyes. Fish oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and, as mentioned earlier, has been proven to support the vision and retinal health.
However, be sure to consult your doctor before taking these supplements. Consume 1000-1200 mg of fish oil in two capsules once a day.
4. Castor Oil
Castor oil is obtained by pressing the seeds of the Ricinus communis and contains high levels of ricinoleic acid. This gives it a natural lubricating property and also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent that relieves the burning and itching associated with dry eyes.
Drip a drop or two of 100% organic castor oil in your eyes. In case pure castor oil is not available, you can also use castor oil eye drops. Apply this 2-3 times a day.
- Cut a chilled cucumber into round slices.
- Place them over your closed eyes for immediate relief.
- You can repeat it 2-3 times a day to relax and soothe your eyes.

6. Fennel Seed
Fennel seeds contain an organic compound called anethole. It is this compound and the presence of flavonoids and phenolics that have anti-inflammatory and soothing properties.
The anti-inflammatory activities of fennel seeds help in reducing inflammation and their soothing properties are used to keep moisture in your eyes.
- 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds
- 1 cup of boiled water
- Cotton ball
- Keep a teaspoon of fennel seeds in boiling water for 10-15 minutes.
- Let it cool down.
- Dip a cotton ball in a fennel and place it over your eyelids.
- Let it sit for at least 10 minutes.
- Do this 2-3 times a day.
7. Warm Compress
The moisture and warmth of warm compresses have been proven to increase the thickness of your tear film, thus relieving eyes.
- A clean cloth.
- A bowl of hot water.
- Dip a clean cloth in a bowl of hot water.
- Squeeze the excess water.
- Hold cloths on your eyelids for 5-10 minutes.
- Repeat several times a day.
