A high fever is the temporary increase in an individual’s body temperature, usually caused by an illness. Fever is not an illness in itself but rather a symptom of other medical conditions. A high fever is usually a sign that something abnormal is happening in the body. A high fever usually goes away on its own within a few days and is generally not a cause for concern unless it reaches 104 degrees fahrenheit or higher. But for babies and toddlers, even a slightly high fever can be a sign that a serious infection is present. For adults, in some cases it is better to let the fever complete its natural course without treatment, because a fever plays an important role in helping an individual’s body fight off various types of infections.
What Causes High Fever?
The immune system reacts as a result of an infection or illness in the body and the area of the brain called the hypothalamus increases body temperature to kill disease-causing organisms. But a fever can become dangerous if it rises much higher than normal. There are several reasons for high fever in humans:
- Bacterial infections
- Sun stroke
- Ear infection
- Cold and flu
- Urinary tract infection
- Certain inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis
- Antibiotics or some medications
- Some vaccines such as diphtheria, tetanus
- Teething in children
- Food poisoning

- Cool yourself with water and a cloth
Soak a piece of cloth in water and apply it as a compress to the body. Never use cold water or take a cold shower for this process. This causes shivering and the fever to rise. Do not add alcohol to the water or wipe your skin with alcohol, as it can cause serious side effects with skin absorption.
- Take a shower in lukewarm water
The most effective method is to shower in lukewarm water. The water temperature should be slightly closer to the cold. A 10-15 minute shower will break your fever.
- Drink plenty of water
The body quickly loses fluid from sweating or sneezing. Dehydration can cause body temperature to rise and often causes headache, dizziness, muscle cramps, low blood pressure, and seizures.
- Wear comfortable clothes
When you have a fever, wear loose, comfortable clothing to help your body relax and stay cool. This is necessary for air circulation in the body. Avoid thick clothing and blankets that can keep heat and cause a prolonged fever.
- Lower the room temperature
Room temperature should be between about 72° F and 75° F. If the room is hot or airless, a fan may work.
Boil a handful of parsley in a liter of water. Then strain and drink 3 times a day.
- Violet leaf
Add a handful of violet leaves in a liter of water. Boil and strain it. Drink a coffee cup 3 times a day.
- Raisin tea
Add 7 cups of water to a cup of raisins and boil it. Lower the heat and continue boiling until the water is reduced by 1/3
- Purple / Red foods
Purple pigments, important in antioxidant protection, strengthen communication between nerve cells, protect brain walls, and strengthen blood vessels to the brain. The foods can break a fever significantly enough to relieve pain. Examples include blueberries, cherries, pomegranates, purple sweet potatoes, purple cauliflower, black grapes and beets.
- Ginger and Turmeric
Ginger and turmeric can help break a fever. They can be be consumed in abundance as they protect nerve cells. You can consume ginger powder in teas or by mixing it with honey. You can consume turmeric by mixing it in all meals, salads or yogurt.
- Basil Tea
Basil has antibacterial, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties. Add a teaspoon of basil with half a teaspoon of black pepper to a glass of hot water. Wait for a few minutes. Strain the mixture. Add some honey and drink this tea 2-3 times a day until you get rid of fever.
- Potato Press
Potatoes are used to break fever caused by infection. It is also suitable for women who have had a fever during pregnancy. Thinly slice the potato. Dip it in vinegar and let it sit for 10 minutes. Place the potato slices on your forehead and cover the potatoes with a cloth. Wait for 20 minutes. Repeat this process twice a day to reduce body temperature sufficiently.
- Thyme Tea
You can use thyme, which increases immunity and has vitamin C, by adding plain or marjoram leaves. Add 1 teaspoon of thyme and marjoram leaves to 1 cup of boiling water and wait for 20 minutes. Strain the tea and drink it lukewarm. Drink it several times a day for effective relief.
