Did your ophthalmologist tell you that you have astigmatism? Is your vision blurry when looking at objects near or far? Astigmatism is a very common problem. You’ve probably heard this term many times. So what exactly is it?
Simply, astigmatism is a condition caused by a cornea or lens that flexes irregularly. The corneas in people with astigmatism are more oval than round.
This is causing a refractive error and deflects the light entering your eyes. Thus, images look blurry. Nobody knows why this situation arises.
However, although astigmatism can have various causes, there is usually one reason that is to blame: genetics.
If you have a vision problem, your parents and possibly other relatives likely also have it.
We mentioned what astigmatism is and how it occurs. Now, let’s talk briefly about the treatments. Most forms of astigmatism are easy to treat.
You also have some corrective options such as glasses, contact lenses and LASIK surgery.
But remember, not all options are equal when it comes to correcting astigmatism. If you are over 40, you may need multifocal or bifocal lenses.
But apart from these medical interventions, there are some eye exercises that you can do at home to stop the progression of astigmatism.

7 Effective Eye Exercises for Astigmatism
1. Preparation for Exercise
Close your eyes first. Then massage them by applying very light pressure with your palms.
2. Focus Exercise
The most important point for astigmatism is the focus. First, focus on an object 20-30 centimeters away from you. After 30 seconds, continue as close and away again.
3. Attention Exercise
Focus on a specific point while on the move, and keep constantly looking towards the object you are focusing on, despite obstacles that interfere with simple movements.
4. 8 Exercise
Draw an imaginary 8 on the wall, ceiling, or table when you sit. Then write your dream number by physically drawing an eight with your eyes. Physical exercise of your eyes will play an extremely important role in the formation of laziness.
5. Measuring the Distance Exercises
Getting an object closer or further away from you can cause problems for focus. So, hold an object as far as possible and focus for 30 seconds.
Then get closer to yourself and keep the focus. Continue the exercise by zooming out.
6. Physical Eye Exercise
This Astigmatism exercise is a simple exercise where you move your eyes up, down, left and right.
7. Tracking Exercise
This exercise is for you to gently relax your eye muscles before moving on to more strenuous exercises.
The goal is to increase the flexibility of the muscles. If this exercise causes any pain, slow down the movements and do not switch to other exercises before you can do them comfortably
- Place your thumb in front of your eyes. The distance of your finger from your face should be less than the width of your hand (about 10 cm) Some people cannot see their finger clearly in this position. This doesn’t matter, because our goal here is just to train the muscles.
- Now slowly move your thumb upwards. Follow your finger to the point where you can see it without moving your head. Then slowly lower your finger down again. Apply this eye-tracking movement, like hour markers, at angles of 15 degrees.
- After doing this exercise for a round, rest your arm and eyes for a minute. When you are ready, do the same exercise again, but this time by harmonizing the movements with your breathing. Inhale as you raise your thumb and exhale as slowly as you can while bringing your finger back to the center point. Notice how the body and eyes relax.
Do this exercise three times a day, resting for a few hours in between. Remember that this is an important exercise for your eyes.
The aim is to stimulate the tension and then relax. If you do this exercise regularly for a certain period, you will relieve the tension that has accumulated in your eye muscles and greatly reduce it.
As a result, your corneas begin to regain their natural shape.
